Big Motoring World Reviews Mercedes A-Class Facelift

The Mercedes A Class has had a facelift to bring it in line with the rest of the Mercedes range classification. As the Mercedes has always been a handsome car, so Big Motoring World reviews the latest model.

New Features

Mercedes claim there’s an extra £1,100-worth of technology, but the price of the car is only £350 more than the previous model. Additionally to the tech, there is also a new feel around the cabin.
The well-finished interior is comfortable and has more of a firm style across the model. New features in the standard model include a fresh media Interface, 16-inch alloys, a reversing camerahttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/lb_icon1.png, Artico upholstery and other items to make them feel premium.

Practicality

Running costs should be impressive, though, as even the automatic-only A220 d sits in Band B for VED, amounting to £20 a year. It’s a 2.1-litre 4cyl turbodiesel engine which produces 175bhp and 350Nm torque. It goes from 0-62mph in 7.2 seconds, with a top speed of 140mph. The optional ‘Comfort mode’ enables an even better drive in soaking up road imperfections, so it feels like a smooth surface before other occupants even notice.

Verdict

Whilst in appears similar visually to the former model, this refined A Class includes some important tweaks. Perhaps the biggest news is the option of adaptive damping for the first time – plus the fitment of Dynamic Select variable drive modes across the majority of the range. Starting at just over £28,000, the A220 d is a similar price to its competitors but feels much more high-quality.

Big Motoring World reviews 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show

The 15th of September sees the start of this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the first time since March where European firms can show off their latest technology and designs. Big Motoring World reviews what we can expect to see.

Frankfurt Motor Show

Frankfurt sits alongside Geneva and Paris as one of the biggest motor shows in the world. And whilst Europe’s main designers will all be in attendance, we will also see some manufacturers from around the globe in attendance.

The event runs until 27th September, with the 17th and 18th of September reserved for trade and fleet visitors. Tickets for the public days are still available from the official website.

BMW

It is expected that BMW will be debuting the new X1, the second generation of its small SUV, which is a more rugged version of the previous model. It includes new petrol engines, increased interior space and the latest safety technology from BMW, which is top-of-the-range.
The 7 Series is also making an appearance, the current flagship car for the brand. New technology includes a new touchscreen infotainment system, gesture control and a world-first ‘Parking Assistant’ features.

BMW also has plans to showcase two new models to add to their range of hybrids, with the330e and 225xe also appearing at the show.

Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes will also be bringing along a show-stopping new cabriolet version of the S-Class luxury Coupe, which is due to go on sale before the end of this year. Refinement and unrivalled luxury are promised by the German manufacturers, as it prepares to take on the BMW 4 Series coupe next year.
Merc also plan to debut the C63 AMG and Edition 1 variant, the new GLC and possibly the GLC Coupe.

Big Motoring World reviews 2015 Mercedes V250 Bluetec SE

Mercedes-Benz have reworked the V-Class into a trendy, new model – named the V250. Formerly known as the Viano, the seven-seater has now been brought up to date. Big Motoring World reviews the latest update.

Technology

The new V-Class maintains the traditions and expectations of the usual V-Class, but this one contains the very latest Mercedes materials, technology and infotainment. The exterior styling has also been updated to integrate the firm's two-blade grille and three-pointed star.

Efficiency

Although the 2.1-litre diesel engine in the V250 has been carried over from the previous model, it has been revised for this year. It emits 166g/km of Co2 and manages 44.8mpg combined, which is better than all of its rivals.

Interior

Mercedes take a huge emphasis on comfort, style and luxury. The interior of the V250 is no different, with slick, full leather and the latest infotainment dash board included as standard. The visibility is top-of-the-range, with a high seating position offering very good forward visibility. Parking sensors and rear-view camera make light work of tight parking situations and make the whole car feel easy to drive.

Performance and handling

The V-Class's four-cylinder diesel is impressively refined, staying both quiet and largely vibration-free when pushed. That said, it rarely needs to be stretched, such is its low-down pull. It manages to get to 62mph from a standing start in just over 9 seconds.

Handling and drive

The steering is consistently weighted and precise, making you feel as though you’re gliding on the road. The seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox works well too, slipping between gears without fuss and rarely getting over-excited and dropping too many gears when a short burst of acceleration is required.

Big Motoring World Reviews Super Car: Mercedes C111

Released in 1969, the Mercedes C111 attracted plenty of interest at the time. However, it was never actually put on sale and only 14 were ever created. Big Motoring World reviews the winged wonder.
The C111 was kept entirely in-house at Mercedes. With its glass-fibre bodied gullwing doors, it was a pioneering vehicle which was used in the research and development of future vehicles. Though the design never took off, the stylish and record-breakingly quick Merc had endurance and power to match.

Design

Mercedes’ big push throughout the 1960s and 70s was safety – how on earth the C111 made it through production is a mystery. Add in the impending fuel crisis and the fact that early models used a Wankel rotary engine – not noted for their efficiency – and the decision not to proceed with a production version seems sensible.

Technology

Amongst other ground-breaking technologies, the C111 was used for testing the latest air-conditioning and anti-lock braking systems. It also used the latest radio antenna for the time and the interior is well-finished to say that it was never available to the public.

Power

The C111 hits a top speed of 74mph which doesn’t sound quick, but the experience of the drive is a lot more than speed. It’s brisk compared to recent developments, but back in the 1970s it really was one of the quickest cars around. Grip and handling is also remarkable to say that this machine is over 45 years of age. A chilled interior, good brakes and a crisp radio signal – certainly an all-time Mercedes classic.

Big Motoring World Reviews 2015 Mercedes CLA Shooting Break

If you’re looking for the extra space and practicality that estates provide, but aren't a fan of their rigid styling, then the Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake is the car you’re after. Off the back of Big Motoring World’s most successful month in 20 years of trading, we look at this revolutionary style of estate car.

Looks

The CLA Shooting Brake is probably the most stylish estate car you’ll find anywhere. It’s most distinguishing feature is its curvy roofline, which elegantly drops away towards the back of the car. From the front it looks identical to the sporty CLA saloon, but from the side, the higher roofline and swept-back looks are clear for all to see. All models come with twin exhausts and striking 18in alloy wheels. The Sport versions also come with xenon headlamps, privacy glass and speed-sensitive steering.

Interior

Inside, things aren’t too different from the CLA coupe's front space – one of the coupe’s big strengths. The dash remains the same, as do the seats and wheel adjustability. Most of the car’s functions are easily controlled through the tablet-style central screen which is glued to the dash, whilst the buttons for the stereo and navigation controls remain the same. The cabin is fitted out with an array of pleasant-feeling materials and finishes which add real comfort. All models get a steering-wheel mounted gearshifter and a beautifully detailed joystick-style lever on the centre console.

Practicality

Although in the design of this estate car, looks and practicality have shared equal importance, the CLA Shooting Break still does its job. The boot holds a roomy 495 litres, which is way more than you could expect from a car of this attractiveness. If you tilt the rear seatbacks to a more upright 'cargo' position, the space increases by another 100 litres. Up front, there's plenty of storage space dotted around the cabin, while the electric parking brake and steering wheel-mounted gear lever free up space for a roomier cockpit. Whilst the rear headroom has also been improved by 40mm.

Big Motoring World reviews 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

Big Motoring World reviews the brand new mid-sized SUV which will replace the very popular GLK next year.

The GLC offers a more modern look with added comfort and advanced technology. The new name signifies that it shares a platform with the C-Class, hence the aggressive redesign, impeccable timing and raft of new technology.

New looks

The GLC is a good looking SUV – it’s fresher, sleeker and more aggressive than most. It has all the right proportions and immediately stands out as something luxurious and sporty.  It has a more of an elegant and modern design that is also more aerodynamic.

Under the bonnet

The GLC-Class will launch with just one engine: the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four has a preliminary output rated at 241hp and 273 pound-feet of torque. It will come standard with a nine-speed automatic transmission and five driving modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual.

Interior

The interior has undergone a slick makeover. It comes equipped with the sporty, three-spoke steering wheel and the wide, angled centre stack with a big infotainment display screen sitting on top. Another bonus is the minimalist approach Mercedes have taken with the centre console. It is clear of clutter and excess buttons and its curved, brushed aluminium trim make it a really enticing feature.

Spacious

Thanks to a wheelbase that has been stretched by 4.6 inches, the interior of the GLC now affords more space, including an extra 2.2 inches of rear seat space. The boot space has also increased by 580 litres and by 1600 litres when the seats are folded down.

Lighter and more efficient

Despite its larger footprint, the new GLC weighs 176 pounds less than the GLK, thanks to the extensive use of aluminium and high-strength steel.  Its lighter mass helps it get about 19 percent better mileage. Mercedes claim that the diesel can get about 42.8 mpg.

Hyper hatch arms race: next Mercedes-AMG A45 will get 400bhp+

Big Motoring World considers the news that Mercedes-AMG chief Tobias Moers has confirmed the next-generation A45 AMG hyper hatch will get a four-cylinder engine – with more than 400bhp.

Power

Speaking at this month’s revealing of the new Mercedes A-Class, Moers confirmed that the AMG will have an all-new four-cylinder engine.

He explained that despite the recent 21bhp increase in Mercedes power to an impressive 376bhp, it is still not possible to extract more horse power from the current turbocharged engine. So with competitors confirming there will be cars surpassing the 400bhp mark, Mercedes is determined to come up with something even more explosive.

Whole Package

Moers said: “It is important for our customers to have the most powerful car in the segment... to us, it is important to offer the whole package”.

With Nurburgring lap times dominating the headlines in recent months, this new A45 may get around the 12.9-mile track in less than eight minutes –at least 10 seconds faster than the outgoing A45 AMG.
Mercedes, however, is not yet considering electrification or hybrid power for its top-spec AMG models and won’t simply install a bigger turbo or rejig the ECU. Using BMW’s six-cylinder M-cars as an example, Mercedes would not drop the V8 C63, “when it is within one or two mpg of lesser rivals.”

The visual changes made to Merc’s standard A-Class will make their way onto the CLA and GLA next year, with both models getting the uprated AMG engines in the coming months.

Big Motoring World reviews this year’s new Mercedes plug-in hybrid

Big Motoring World reviews the new Mercedes GLE500e plug-in hybrid, which came out earlier this year. It was the first M-Class model to be named ‘GLE’, which signifies the beginning of Mercedes’ new and improved hybrid range.

Improvements

The GLE looks smooth on the outside, with new headlights and an improved grille, bonnet, bumper and wings at the front. The front end is so far from a C-Class, yet very similar from the back. Another new bumper to the tail end and blue LED lights signify its hybrid status and glamorous exterior, to really set it apart from previous models.
The major change inside is the new tablet-style ‘infotainment’ screen, which we first saw in the A-Class. There are plenty of upgrades on features and technology.

What’s it like to drive?

A combined total output of 434bhp and lashing of instant electric motor torque makes relatively light work of the 2.5-tonne kerbweight in a straight line. It goes 0-62mph in just 5.3sec – nearly half a second faster than its rivals.

Verdict

If you really wanted a plug-in hybrid M-Class, then the waiting is over. And it really lives up to all expectations. Hybrid is the way the market is going, so it appears this style and model is only going to get better. An innovative release for Mercedes’ new eco-friendly brand.

Big Motoring World reviews 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class saloon has been spotted testing in Nurburgring ahead of its anticipated launch in mid-2016. Big Motoring World reviews what changes we can expect from the German manufacturer’s fifth-generation of its executive car.

The new model, borrowing design cues from the latest C-Class and S-Class, is likely to make its debut in early 2016 just before its closest competitor, BMW's next 5 Series. The new-generation model will once again grow in size, to about 4590mm long and 1940mm wide. This slight increase in size is down to the new rear-wheel-drive MRA platform, which currently underpins the new C-Class and S-Class. The new E-Class will ride on newly developed suspension that features variable-rate damping.

Lightweight

One of the key features of the new 2016 E-Class is the increased use of high-strength steel and aluminium, which is expected to shave between 70-150kg from the kerbweight of today’s model. The lightweight architecture should result in improved efficiency and a better driving experience, as well as allow for additional passenger space. The aerodynamics have also been refined so that the drag coefficient has improved from 0.25 to a class-leading 0.23.

Interior

The interior will be completely updated, including as 150mm-tall, 700mm-wide dashboard monitor which boasts HD graphics. Mercedes also plans to install an improved head-up display and new multi-function steering wheel controls.

Driving Style

Stylistically, the new E-Class follows the latest C-Class and the GLA. It is expected to adopt a slender new exterior styling. The previous version was a relatively boxy car, with deliberately angular surfaces, but Mercedes new design adopts a curvier, sleeker profile and softer details.
The onwards march towards autonomous driving will be furthered by the E-class’s stepping-stone technology. Officials hint that it will offer a function that will allow it to automatically accelerate, brake, change lanes, overtake and include a full range of self-parking functions. The art of driving is changing at a scarily exciting pace and the new E-class charges us straight into this brave new world.

Mercedes GLE Coupe in the latest Blockbuster movie

Big Motoring World reviews the new Mercedes GLE Coupe, which features with both four and six-wheeled versions of the G-Class SUV in the biggest blockbuster of the year so far, Jurassic World. The film is due for release later this summer, and by then the GLE Coupe will already have been released.

Power

The lowest-priced petrol engine is the 362bhp 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 in the 450 AMG, starting at £62,800. It's capable of 31.7mpg combined and emits 209g/km of CO2. The next rung of the ladder is the luxurious Designo Line spec, which is priced just under £10,000 more, but brings niceties such as active park assist with a 360-degree camera, soft-close doors,  a panoramic sunroof, quilted leather with cooling and massaging functions and a Harmon-Kardon surround sound system.

The top-of-the-range Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 starts at £96,550 and sports a 5.5-litre twin turbo V8. It develops a whopping 577bhp and 760Nm of torque, which sees the 2.3 tonne SUV reach 62mph from a still start in 4.2 seconds. The top speed is 174mph.

Design

A steeply raked windscreen allows for an elegant design to the front of this model, with unique front doors and a sloping roofline; the sharp bumper designs really add to the distinctive look of the car. There’s also plenty of legroom and boot space, more even than he seven-seat X5. The swoopy new model makes its big screen debut in the film, rivalling the new BMW X6. It’s on sale now, starting from £60,680.

Big Motoring World Reviews: Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster Auction

The 1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR is a unique car. It looks like it’s about to conquer the toughest races, but it’s actually a road-legal luxury car.

The CLK-GTR is part of an almost extinct species of motoring culture – along with the Porsche 911 GT1 StraĂźenversion and McLaren F1 GTR, these are the sort of cars that are only built once in a lifetime.

The Car

This Benz is not only unique for a production model, but also for a racing one as well. It was the materialisation of Mercedes’ desire to compete, and essentially win in the FIA GT Championship. The regulations stated that at least 25 models are created to qualify, so Mercedes went and produced 26 CLK-GTRs.  6 of those are drop-tops, making the car even more exotic.

Under the hood lies an enormous 6.9-litre, AMG V12 engine, which produces 604-hp and 775 Nm of torque. The cars weighs 1,440 Kg which is on the heavy side, but the engine manages to sprint the Merc from 0 to 100 Km/h (62mph) in just 3.8 seconds.

The Auction

So, finding a Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR for sale is a rarity. Finding one with just 6 kilometres on the clock is like finding a unicorn in your garage. This beast is coming up for sale at the Goodwood Festival of speed and it’s offered by Bonham’s. For an estimated £1.4-£1.8m, you can get your hands on the only black-painted, untouched, barely used CLK-GTR roadster in existence.

Major Coupé for Mercedes

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the Concept GLC Coupé, carrying the previous successful formulae into a more compact segment.

Mercedes Elegance

The company has said in a recent press release that the dynamic and expressive show car has combined the typical styles of a coupĂ© with the pure design of upcoming SUV generations. Extremely strong in character, this prototype has a twin-blade radiator grille, power domes on the bonnet and a dour-pipe exhaust system which look great.

Almost all of the main body section is harmonious and is an eclectic mix of styles combining Mercedes elegance and a rugged, off-road feel with 21 inch tyres, front and rear underbody protection and increased ground clearance indicative of its off-road potential.

Mercedes-Benz GT vs. BMW i8 sportscar duel

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the AMG GT S coupe in Stuttgart, Germany, on Tuesday, after months of speculations and spy photos. This is the second car developed completely in-house at AMG in Affalterbach, following the SLS AMG, and it’s the company’s latest super-car.
Mercedes has not announced pricing for the 2016 GT and GT S, but says the GT S will be available in the United States in the spring of 2015. The GT will arrive in 2016.

The rumormill churns out a base price starting at $120,000.
BMW i8 uses a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a turbocharged three-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and BMW eDrive technology in the form of an electric drive system. The 1.5-liter combustion engine develops 170 kW/231 hp and drives the rear wheels of the BMW i8, while the 96 kW/131 hp electric drive sends its power to the front wheels and allows an all-electric range of up to 35 kilometres (22 miles) and a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph).

It is built primarily of carbon fibre and the i8 represents the future of “green sport-cars”.

While the BMW i8 is not considered a direct competitor, on paper, to the Mercedes GT, we took the time to see how the two cars compare visually.

Mercedes updates the E-Class, adding improved standard kit, more power and lower emissions

Following 2013’s major facelift, Mercedes has once again set about improving the E-Class. On sale from September, there’s now improved standard kit across the range, with all variants also benefiting from more power, lower emissions and the German brand’s new 9G-Tronic gearbox.
Developed in-house, the nine-speed automatic transmission will be paired as standard to the E350 BlueTEC engine in the saloon, estate, coupe and cabriolet. It sees CO2 emissions drop by up to 17g/km, with the coupe leading the way, releasing only 136g/km. Economy has seen a similar improvement, too, resulting in up to 5.4mpg more depending on the model in question, all of which has been achieved alongside the addition of an extra 6bhp, taking total output up to 254bhp.

Every new E-Class will gain Collision Prevention Assist Plus as standard, too, designed to avoid and reduce the impact of collisions. This includes autonomous braking tech that works at up to 62mph should the driver fail to respond, and can also respond to stationary vehicles at up to 30mph, or else prevent rear-end accidents at up to 24mph.
Optional extras include the Premium and Premium Plus packs, which Mercedes claims will save customers 27 percent over purchasing each item separately. For the saloon, the £2,695 Premium Package adds a panoramic sunroof, split folding rear seats, reversing camera and Memory Package. Premium Plus costs a further £1,200, and throws in Keyless Go, the Comfort Pack and a more sophisticated sound system.
Both of these come in at slightly less when fitted to the Estate, costing £2,395 and £3,495 respectively, as the split folding seats and powered boot lid is already standard.

Other Mercedes are rumoured to be making an appearance late 2014! Take a look that these:

Mercedes AMG GT

Price: £80,000
On sale: late 2014

Mercedes has never had a true Porsche 911 rival, but that’s all set to change with the new AMG GT. Mercedes designer Gorden Wagener told Auto Express that the two-seater – revealed in our exclusive image – was “the most beautiful car me and my team have ever worked on”, taking inspiration from the 1952 Panamerica 300SL.
Under the skin will be a new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 developing around 480bhp, putting the car in direct competition with Jaguar’s new F-Type CoupĂ©.

Mercedes V-Class
Price: £35,000
On sale: autumn 2014

Although it’s an eight-seat MPV, the new V- Class has been designed to stand apart from Mercedes’ commercial vehicle range. It’ll replace the Viano and be repositioned as part of the passenger car line-up. UK buyers can choose from two diesel-engined models (the V220 CDI or V250 BlueTEC); both have adaptive dampers as standard. An extra-long- wheelbase model is also available.

Mercedes GL-Class

The present generation of the Mercedes GL-Class and the large -sized SUV is already under the watchful eye of Mercedes for a makeover to refresh its overall look.

This choice to renew the GL-Class at the same time as the reveal of the future MLC and the M-Class Facelift is fairly surprising and it seems like Mercedes-Benz are planning to diminish the first lifespan of its big-sized SUV in order to make the transition towards the forthcoming X 167 series.

The changes on the layout of the GL Class won’t be anything drastic but rather a new grille and headlights (with inner LED graphics that is attractive)

The rear lamps will stay pretty much the same with a slightly darker tint. A dashboard integrated screen. It will also have the most recent COMAND which has touchpad control.

Although the changes to the design are said to be minimal we’re looking forward to seeing them.

The New Mercedes Actros: ‘Fleet Truck of the Year 2014’

The Mercedes-Benz new Actros has been voted ‘Fleet Truck of the Year’ at the prestigious Motor Transport Awards 2014.

The award was judged by an independent panel of experienced industry professionals. The Actros caught the judge’s eye, and was singled out due to its low full consumption which allows the trucks to do more mpg, lowers the cost of ownership (cheap to run), unrivalled driver comfort, and excellent parts and service support through a highly focused dealer network. If anything goes wrong with mechanical or technical problems it will be solved quickly.

Since the launch in early 2012, the new Actros has found favour with countless fleets across the UK and this award recognises that Mercedes is delivering a range of vehicles and services that their customers can both rely on and value.

We at Big Motoring World would like to join in on congratulating Mercedes with this big achievement and wish them all the best for the future with the Actros and any other projects.

Germany do it again... Mercedes S65 AMG!

As much as we hate to admit it, I think we all knew that England’s chances of winning the World Cup were pretty thin and yesterday it all came to ahead with Germany coming out on top (congratulations by the way!).

But, Germany are on top for more reasons than one with the release of the Mercedes S65 AMG Coupe.

This car boats an impressive 630bhp (break horsepower) as well as a seven speed automatic gearbox!
There are three models available: efficiency, sport and manual. All of which have a 6.0 litter, twin turbo V12 engine that's capable of doing 0 – 62MPH in 4.1 seconds with a top speed of 155MPH. I think you’ll agree that’s pretty impressive!

With the Mercedes S65 AMG sitting at the top of the S-Class tree we will be the first to say we can’t wait to get our hands on one and take it for a test drive!

Where Mercedes began...

Mercedes-Benz is a German manufacturer of luxury cars who’s headquarters can be found in Stuttgart, Baden Wurttemberg, Germany.
Mercedes is a multinational division of the German manufacturer Daimler AG and not only manufacture cars. They also make buses, coaches and lager trucks/lorries.

Mercedes-Benz’s history can be traced back to Karl Benz and the creation of the first petrol car which was actually funded by his wife, Bertha Benz. The “automobile” was first marketed in 1901 by Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft. The first Mercedes-Benz brand name vehicles were produced in 1926, following the merger of Karl Benz's and Gottlieb Daimler's companies into the Daimler-Benz company

Mercedes-Benz's slogan is "Das Beste oder nichts" which translates to: “The Best or Nothing” (apt we think)

Mercedes-Benz is part of the "German Big 3" luxury car makers, along with Audi
 and BMW
. These 3 manufactures are the three leading luxury car sellers and it just so happens that we stock all three. To browse what we have in stock click here
