Big Motoring World Reviews BMW i3 Shadow Sport Edition

The new special-edition carbon-fibre BMW i3 range has been unveiled ahead of its 2016 launch. Big Motoring World reviews the latest sport edition, which includes an electronic sunroof and various other style changes.

Production

The hybrid had been unable to allow glass on the roof in previous models since the range was first unveiled in 2013. But now, the 2016 i3 Shadow Sport Edition comes with a conventional power-tilting sunroof.

You’ll need to act fast if you want a model with the sunroof – there are only 50 to be produced with fully electric examples, though the range-extending engine will exist in other models.

Design

The Fluid Black paint with bright blue highlights for the dark grey cloth seats is a new design for the Shadow Sport which, along with the 19-inch wheels 10-spoke wheels which ensures the vehicle looks slick and sporty throughout.

The addition of the sport-tuned suspension is also exclusive to this Limited Edition and allows for increased sportier handling and dampening settings.

Market

The other i3 models haven’t changed in price or equipment for 2016. Base prices start at £28,500 for the battery version with an EPA-estimated 81-mile range, or from £31,000 for the gas-powered Range Extender model with 150 miles of total range.

The i3 is currently only available in the US, but it is anticipated that the technology will be used in further models to roll out globally.

Big Motoring World reviews the mysterious BMW which may never make the production line

BMW have used a research vehicle with plenty of mystery about it. Last week, some design patents appeared in China, but it appears that the radical design is unlikely to make production. Big Motoring World looks into the hydrogen fuel cell technology in the model.

According to PCauto.com.cn, the official patent designs from a BMW were filed with the Chinese trademark office. The assumption was that this is a future “i” vehicle, maybe even the i5, but it turns out that’s far from the truth.

Research

It’s believed that the research being carried out involves the hydrogen fuel cell technology previewed earlier this year in Miramas. They’re also looking into using lightweight material for its primary structure, outer panels, various interior elements and wheels. There are plans to make the latest model 135kg lighter than the previous design, as experimented with the prototype.

Design

The design forgoes the traditional side mirror, replaced by video cameras which are used to capture images that appear within a monitor mounted in the place of the traditional rear-view mirror. The boot has an impressive 348 litres of space, whilst the power comes from both a rear electric motor and a front-mounted 1.0 litre two-cylinder petrol engine.

The BMW is claimed to hit 62mph in less than 7 seconds, hit a top speed of 112mph and return 706mpg on the combined fuel cycle, giving it average CO2 emissions of less than 10g/km.

BMW i3 available for emergency services

The all-electric BMW i3 continues to show its worth, as it is to be used by fire, police and rescue services around the world. Big Motoring World reviews the decision.

Premium Technology

Designed solely for electric mobility, the i3 will be the world’s first premium vehicle aligned for the emergency services. Authorities Bavaria, Milan, Los Angeles and London have added the new vehicle to their fleet.

BMW is the only car manufacturer able to tailor their cars’ services to each department of services, exclusively aligning their vehicles to police, rescue and fire service task forces. Digital radio, front and rear flashers and a special signalling system are just some of the features which come as standard with the vehicle. Pressure-chamber loudspeakers are also included.

Convenience, Safety & Intuitiveness

The ConnectedRescue system, which is based on BMW Connected Drive, is able to support the emergency services with important information about incidents. This including addresses, contact people and further details including the surrounding reasons for deployment. This will clearly support operations and be intuitive to the services.

The navigation system is also able to prevent transmission errors, enabling the driver to focus solely on the traffic on the road ahead. This enhances both safety and efficiency of rescue forces.
Another special version of i3 is in use for locally emission-free cash transport in the Polish capital of Warsaw. The Polish bank enables shop owners in Warsaw to request the i3 via mobile app and take their daily takings securely and conveniently.

Big Motoring World Reviews Mercedes-Benz Vision Tokyo

The 2015 Tokyo Motor Show has paved the way for Mercedes-Benz’ new concept, the Vision Tokyo. Big Motoring World take a closer look into the model, and consider the potential of the latest Benz.

The Vision Tokyo has been described as a “trailblazing spatial experience” and features a lounge-like five-seat interior in a fully electric vehicle.

Concept and style

It’s capable of autonomous driving and continues the recent Merc concept, of which first came the Vision Ener-G-Force (2012). That was followed by the AMG Vision Gran Turismo (2013) and later the G-Code (2014).

The upward swinging side door allows for five passengers to enter the Vision Tokyo, greeted by an oval-shaped couch rather than conventional rows of seats. It’s designed so that with the car in autonomous driving mode they are able to relax or access the internet via large, wrap-around LED screens, without having to worry about the roads in front. The windshield is also unconventional, as it looks similar to a glazed cockpit of a speedboat rather than a car.

Power

The hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric drive system is based on the F-Cell plug-in hybrid driveline of the F 015 Luxury in Motion and combines the on-board generation of electricity with a compact high-voltage battery that can be charged contactless via induction.

Mercedes claims a range of 608 miles, 120 battery-powered and the rest from the electricity produced in the fuel cell. The Tokyo Show 2015 opened to the public at the end of October.
