Big Motoring World Reviews BMW i8 and Apple Watch connectivity

The BMW i8 is priced at £104,540, yet still represents huge value for money for the select few who are fortunate enough to buy one. Here, Big Motoring World reviews the momentous technology of the i8 which also combines with Apple Watch.

The i8

The i8 boasts a complex petrol-electric hybrid powertrain and carbon fibre construction which set it apart from many previous hybrids. It has a concept-car look and a class-leading infotainment system which gives it a full driving experience.

The technology

BMW released a smartphone app in the initial i8 launch, but now things have been taken up a level. Owners can now remotely control functions on the car directly from their wrists using Apple Watch, which includes controlling car heating, flashing the headlights and the radio. The smartphone app has even more features, including sharing your eco stats with other i8 users. The app includes building a navigation route to your preferred destination and hooking it up to your i8’s Drive System before you’ve even set foot in the car.

Future

Unlike much of recent technology, the BMW technology is all useful and adds to your driving experience. Connectivity and internet access needs to be at a premium for the full realisation of this technology to be discovered, but this is a clear step in the right direction for BMW. It is expected that this technology will continue into further developments by BMW which will filter down into other models.

BMW i8 and 2 Series Coupe named 2015 AUTOMOBILE All-Star

Automobile Magazine names the BMW i8 and 2 Series Coupe on their AUTOMOBILE All-Star list. To keep thing simple, Automobile Mag says their All-Stars will be the only star cars and only new cars launched. No complicated criteria, no price caps, no categories.
Both the i8 and 2 Series Coupe made their debut this year, and while the 228i or M235i are widely available at U.S. dealerships, the hybrid sports car i8 remains sold out at most dealers.

Here is an excerpt from their review of the 2 Series
The 2 Series is BMW’s most intimate car, at least distantly related to the 2002 model, and it’s diminutive by today’s supersized standards. The 3.0-liter turbo is one of the sweetest engines made today, partly because it’s potent but not pretentious, and intensely responsive. Like the entire car, it’s not out to make a big statement. This car is for the true Bimmer believers or, better yet, the car to create a new crop of believers.
The BMW M235i is not a true-blue M model — gods willing, an M2 will arrive soon — but even the base 228i is a total blast. The engine and power are downsized (a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 240 hp), but the fun isn’t. Equipped with a manual, it weighs less than 3,300 pounds. It will teach you a lesson in rolling momentum, using the brakes only when necessary and negotiating the highest cornering speed while mitigating understeer. Any decent driver can go quickly with 600 hp and carbon-ceramic brakes; it takes old-school skills to do the same in a 2. The beauty is that you’ll murder heavier, high-horsepower cars in the corners.

In other words, it’s pretty hot stuff.
The specialness begins the second you duck below the swan-wing doors, cosy into luxurious chairs, and fire up the all-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain: 129 electric horses for front wheels and a 228-hp, electrically assisted three-cylinder gasoline engine out back. Gentle driving lets the i8 cover roughly 22 miles on battery power alone. In our testing, it delivered up to 38 highway mpg.
Toggle up to Sport mode, and the BMW i8 replenishes its 7.1-kilowatt-hour battery on the fly — “fly” being the operative word, with the i8 surging from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. The i8’s yee-haw acceleration doesn’t seem to compute with 357 on-paper horses, until you consider the slender 3,455- pound curb weight, nitrous-like electric boost, and a ruthlessly effective six-speed automatic transmission.
With a long wheelbase, precise (if over light) steering, and an intimate GT-style cabin, the BMW is adept at both stoplight and weekend getaways. All-wheel-drive poise combines with surprisingly robust grip for a car with relatively narrow, fuel-saving 20-inch tires. Yet this hybrid saved some gas-electric fireworks for GingerMan Raceway, carving fluid laps and charming the pants off driver after driver.

Has BMW Been Catching Up To Tesla In The EV Sector?

It is very rare when one can say BMW needs to catch up to someone in the automotive segment, but when it comes to the electric vehicles market, that statement might be valid. BMW is new at the EV game where companies like Tesla Motors have been at the forefront of this for years and have opened the doors for other automakers as well. Often seen as competitors, truth is that Tesla is not only helping BMW, but the entire industry of electric vehicles.
Tesla has been providing the upper-mid class of car owners the green solution they need with the Model S which was launched back in 2012. Only a handful of Model S units were sold that year, but that was followed by 22,000 deliveries in 2013. This year, Tesla Motors are now looking into delivering more than 33,000 cars.

On the other hand, BMW has not yet ventured in developing a luxury sedan powered only by electric motors, but it has still managed to put out the high-performer BMW i8, and the great, small and nimble BMW i3. Especially the latter one is selling in respectable numbers.
According to green energy website CleanTechnica, it seems that over the past three months sales for BMW’s fully electric i3 accounted for 4.9% of its total US sales – which is the highest share of total sales among all the car manufacturers that don’t strictly sell electric cars. What’s more important, the high share means an overall shift to the electric car technology as well.
For the first three months after its launch, the mid-range electric city car only made up 2.3% of BMW’s total U.S. sales, so the latest sales report show a healthy increase in overall sales and demand.
It was also reported earlier that the BMW i3 had outsold Tesla’s Model S in August. Sales for BMW i3 in the month totaled 1,025 units, a nice increase of 182% sequentially, while Tesla Model S sales came at 600 units, which is  54% lower over the same period last year.
While not competing directly now, the two automakers are on a collision path within the next 2-3 years. While BMW has their own share of sedan hybrid vehicles, a fully electric powered mid-range sedan has yet to arrive. The BMW i5 might be the solution.

On the other hand, Tesla Motors has yet to venture into the small city car electric vehicle product range, meaning the American automaker still relies mostly on the Model S for the time being. A 3 Series electric competitor is in works though and will arrive in 2017.
During a shareholder meeting in April, Tesla CEO, Elon Musk said, “We can produce something like the i3 or better than i3 right now, but it wouldn’t be great. It wouldn’t be amazing.”
While BMW has been catching up to the Tesla Motors in terms of electric vehicles, overall sales of vehicles in general is still very much on BMW’s side of the fence.
Both automakers need a subtle transition into different market; Tesla, on one hand, needs to expand its product range accordingly, while BMW needs to improve the i3 in the next iteration and also deliver new electric vehicles to the masses.
Sales and demand for the BMW i3 and BMW i8, and the Tesla Model S show that the electric vehicles market is ready and future, diversified products will cater to new demographics therefore increasing their market share.

The two companies are certainly at the forefront of the electric vehicles revolution, and both are also disrupting other industries as well. BMW is heavily invested in the production of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), while Tesla is building their own battery factory.

Rumor - BMW i8s with 500+ hp coming in 2016

George Kacher, a journalist well connected with BMW sources, reports for Automobile mag that the Munich-based automaker is preparing a new 'Green' supercar for 2016...

George Kacher, a journalist who is very well known and connected with BMW sources, reports for Automobile mag that the Munich-based automaker is preparing a new 'Green' supercar for 2016, The centenary year for BMW. Built under the codename M100, the car will sold under the BMW i8s badge.

Ulrich Kranz is once again in charge of the BMW i supercar and the new program director Roberto Fedeli, who has just recently moved from Ferrari, is going to be working alongside. Even though the BMW i8s is based on the "regular i8" model, the anniversary car will come with many different bespoke parts that could almost be advertised as a brand new car.

The carbon fiber life module and the drive module will be retained, however new materials, lightweight construction techniques and even the lack of the rear seats will point to a whole new car. Also a reworked transmission and stronger brakes are on the list as well.

The biggest change comes from under the hood where the car will get a combine power output over 500 horsepower and 500ib-ft of torque. However the current i8 pairs the turbo three-cylinder's 228hp and 236ib-ft of torque with 129hp and 184ib-ft from its electric motor.

The new mid-engine plug-in supercar is still being evaluated in two different configurations. One of the features a twin-turbo 2.0-litre four rated at approximately 320hp; also the other one boasts a 3.0-litre straight-six good for close to 480hp - most likely the S55 engine from the BMW M3 and M4.

Meanwhile the petrol engine drives the rear wheels just as in the BMW i8, the electric motor propels the front wheels. Its power output is 109hp when mated to the six and 204hp when supporting the four. Common to both versions is a rear-mounted integrated starter generator, which develops 27hp. A dual-clutch transmission with 9-speeds is said to be used.

The curb weight of the BMW i8S model is said to exceed 3,455 pounds, the extra 150-plus horsepower will help with performance. The top speed may again be limited to 155mph, but the 0-62mph acceleration is said to improve from 4.1-3.5seconds

if the BMW i8 starts at £136,625 the i8S will be priced higher to reflect its status

BMW I8 owners tips and observations from the first 880 miles

(880 miles on the clock) Originally expecting the car in February/March and winter is quickly approaching we had some catching up to do. Here are some observations. The MPG for those 880 miles was 35.1 that are with the dealer not charging the car and not charging anywhere, gas only for those miles. Before we do anything else ‘turn on’ “prefer expressways” or something similar in the Nav options, or the Nav system will take us over the river and through the words in an attempt to achieve the “fastest” route, even if that means selecting a winding 45 mph back road that shaves a minute off staying on the interstate 3 more exits.

There’s a lit box with “AUTO” on top in the climate display, with a bar with five positions. I thought this was telling us what speed the fan was running in auto, but its how much energy intensive we want the Auto setting to be.

Don’t switch driving modes right before you move from a stop, say at a red light right as it changes to green. There is a good 2-3 second pause when stationary when the car changes to a different mode, it’s instant and unnoticeable when moving but jarring right as you’re pulling out.

Turn off “sport” when entering a parking lot/parking. For two reasons: one, sport makes the car very aggressive from a standstill. Lunging towards a spot with a high club is no fun. Two, if we go to make a multi point turn, pushing forward on the stick while in sport doesn’t put the car in reverse... it will only go into reverse if it’s in the non-sport position.
The speed limit reading camera is going to ruin us in other cars. As is the “gods-eye” camera when parking. The Bluetooth audio is the best implementation I’ve come across. The stereo is excellent.

The trunk is big enough for a overhead bin roller carry-on suitcase and not much else. The back seat is your trunk for everything else.
People that are 6’0” cant sit in the back seat without breaking their neck/turning my head to a 45 degree angle. And even then it wouldn’t be comfortable with my broad shoulders. It would be right for a 5’ person kids are probably fine.
Getting in and out is a challenge for anyone not use to wide sills for unconventional doors on cars (which is pretty much everyone), but we don’t find it an issue... but most people probably will. My boyfriend loves everything about the car except having to “crawl out of it.

Overall this car is good, but if you are over 6’0” and you’re not on the skinny side then you might have a few problems, but I defiantly think the car is worth its money.

2014 Paris Motor Show: BMW X5 eDrive Hybrid

BMW’s “green fleet” was represented at the 2014 Paris Motor Show not only by the BMW i3 and i8, but also by the BMW X5 eDrive Hybrid. With just a few months before its market debut, the plug-in hybrid X5 continues its auto show circuit and lands in Paris.
The X5 xDrive40e is the first hybrid X5 to be offered and it was previewed last year at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

The plugin hybrid will featured a four-cylinder petrol engine with turbocharging technology which generates, along with an electric motor, an output of 200 kW (272 hp). The standard sprint to 100 km/h is achieved by the BMW X5 xDrive40e in less than 7.0 seconds. Up to 120 km/h of pure electric drive is possible thanks to the 70 kW electric motor.
The seamless transition between electric, combined electric-petrol and pure petrol is remarkably smooth.

Visually, the plugin hybrid differs from the “regular X5″ mainly through an additional opening at the front left fender where the engineers placed a power connector for charging the high-voltage battery, which is housed in the rear of the vehicle.

To manage battery capacity BMW has created three drive modes for the X5 eDrive, Intelligent Hybrid, Pure Electric, and Save Battery. It is the Save Battery mode that highlights how BMW expects the vehicle to be used. Going into Save Battery mode restricts the use of battery capacity – allowing for a reserve to complete a journey in pure electric mode inside a city core for example.

BMW Increasing i3 and i8 Availability In U.S.

BMW is looking to increase the production of i3 and i8models in the US.
The company has sold 3,104 i3s from May-September in the U.S. this year, and the i8 sold nine when launched in August, 58 in September, and it is sold out at BMW dealers through to 2015. To date BMW has globally sold 10,000 i3s and 280 i8s.

In the U.S., BMW has tallied 3,104 sales of the i3 and 67 deliveries of the i8 through September.
Despite the hefty price tag and in some cases, the additional markup, the i8 is a huge seller for BMW. The i3 has a base price of $42,300 including shipping.
“We are looking at taking a few i3 slots and making i8s because they go down the same production line,” said Ian Robertson, the company’s board member for sales and marketing, “The wait times are too long, and we will adjust that and sell more i8s, but cautiously.”
Globally, BMW is selling around 100 i-Series cars per day, he said. The daily production of i vehicles is around the same number.

Both cars are assembled in Leipzig, Germany and worldwide there have been 130,000 test drives of the i-Series cars to date.

Robertson said the i cars have helped polish BMW’s image as a leader in innovation and technology.

World’s Greatest Drag Race: BMW M4, i8, Porsche 911 Turbo S, Camaro Z/28, Jaguar F-Type, Nissan GT-R

MotorTrend puts together an impressive line-up for their annual Worlds’ Greatest Drag Race. This year’s contenders start with the new BMW i8 and M4 Coupe, and continues with Alfa Romeo 4C, Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, Jaguar F-Type Coupe R, Nissan GT-R Nismo, Porsche 911 Turbo S, Ford Fiesta ST, Subaru WRX STI and the Volkswagen Golf GTI.
Talk about a variety of different cars with unique attributes and power outputs.

Based on the power output and engines found under the hood, the favorites were the 911 Turbo S, Nissan GTR, Jaguar F-Type R Coupe and Camaro Z/28. While the BMW M4 handles itself amazing on a race track, it is simply not powerful enough to keep up with the big boys on a straight line.
So which comes at the top?
Porsche 911 Turbo S which runs in the quarter mile in 10.9 seconds at 126 mph. Following very closely is the Nissan GT-R Nismo with 11.1 seconds at 125.3 mph. Just barely behind the GT-R we have the Jaguar F-Type Coupe R with a quarter mile of 11.8 seconds at 122.3 mph.
BMW M4 comes up on the fourth place with 12.2 seconds at 117.8 mph while the i8 finishes sixth: 12.4 seconds at 112.1 mph. Not a bad time for the hybrid sportscar.

2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray vs BMW i8 Drag Race

Is the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray faster than the 2015 BMW i8 Hybrid in a straight up drag race? In other words, which is faster….a traditional V8 or the new BMW Hybrid gasoline and electric i8. Just watch this TFL car drag race video to find out.
The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray has a 6.2-litre V8 engine producing 460-horsepower and reaching 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds (4.1 with 1 foot of rollout as on a drag strip) and clears the quarter-mile in 12.4 seconds at 113.7 mph.

Mercedes-Benz GT vs. BMW i8 sportscar duel

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the AMG GT S coupe in Stuttgart, Germany, on Tuesday, after months of speculations and spy photos. This is the second car developed completely in-house at AMG in Affalterbach, following the SLS AMG, and it’s the company’s latest super-car.
Mercedes has not announced pricing for the 2016 GT and GT S, but says the GT S will be available in the United States in the spring of 2015. The GT will arrive in 2016.

The rumormill churns out a base price starting at $120,000.

How About A Four-Door BMW i8?

Artist from BMW gives us a futuristic view - a BMW i8 with four-doors. The rendered i8 is based off the production model and comes with rear suicide doors as seen on the BMW i3 Megacity.
The photo shopped i8 is clearly just an imaginary car as BMW has no intention to unveil a four-door model in the future. A potential i9 car may appear in the future, but details are scarce at this point in time.

BMW went on sale this summer and uses a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a turbocharged three-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and BMW eDrive technology in the form of an electric drive system.

The 2014 BMW i8 has a base price of $135,700 but some dealers are asking as much as $100,000 over the MSRP. A recent one-off BMW i8 sold for $825,000 in Pebble Beach.

BMW i8 Replica For Sale on eBay

Laurel BMW of Westmont, IL, is selling on eBay a full scale replica of the new BMW i8. Ahead of its launch, most of the BMW i-certified dealerships around the country have received a full scale BMW i8 model to be showcased to customers in their show rooms.
Made of fiberglass, the i8 replica comes with functional LED lights but there’s a slight catch- It does not drive, doesn’t have an engine or transmission. You cannot open the doors and it does not have an interior. And furthermore, the wheels do not roll. So as you can probably tell, you won’t get very far at any speed in this BMW i8.
The eBay advertisement say that the BMW i8 replica should weight about 500 lbs since it was “carried in” by four guys. It is hollow underneath, about a quarter inch thick and it has bracing inside so it is very stable.

Essentially the car looks in its place in any spot you put it so we can see this popping up in the future in clubs, bar, restaurants or even in design exhibitions.
As of midnight, August 23, the bidding price was up to $8,200, not bad for a purposeless vehicle that doesn’t function like a car should.

The 2014 BMW i8 has a base price of $135,700. A recent one-off BMW i8 sold for $825,000 in Pebble Beach.

I8: 300,000 euros per car sold for advertising costs

It’s a well-known fact that the advertising of a new products is pricey but 300,000 per car sold…really?

According to the German trade journal Advertising and sell, BMW has invested around 16.6 million euros in 2014- just for the first half of the year all on the i8!

There has been 55 of the i8’s sold which equates to 301,818 Euros per car sold! The i8 is still in prosecution although production remains limited due to the volume constraints at the production factory. The number of i8’s sold is still said to be on the increase and is expected to increase dramatically in the next few months with the release in the US Market.

We wish BMW all the best with the i8 sales and we’re hoping to have one soon too but can you really justify 300,000 on advertising per car?

Golf Cart vs. BMW i8 – Which One Is Faster?

Golf Cart vs. BMW i8 –

Which One Is Faster?

A golf cart takes on the new and powerful BMW i8. Unlike most races, this race is not on a race track or normal roads, but around a golf course….the odds are fifty-fifty.

So what’s so special about BMW i8? BMW i8 uses a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a turbocharged three-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and BMW eDrive technology in the form of an electric drive system. The 1.5-liter combustion engine develops 170 kW/231 hp and drives the rear wheels of the BMW i8, while the 96 kW/131 hp electric drive sends its power to the front wheels and allows an all-electric range of up to 35 kilometers (22 miles) and a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph). It’s pretty spectacular.
The BMW golf cart seen in the video probably packs around 10-20 horsepower, but is that enough? Take a look to see the outcome:

“I am the possible…”

Nothing sells us a product like its advert and we have to say,  the advert for the BMW i8 is rather spectacular.

With its sleek, futuristic design and staggeringly low running costs (due to it being so economical) it’s easy to see why the car is so sought after.

Hitting the UK market at £99,125 it may cause a bit of a hole in the ol’ savings account but with a 1.5 litre engine as well as two electric motors this little pocket-rocket is capable of a top speed of 155mph. With 357bhp it means the car can go from 0-60mph in no more than 4.4 seconds- pretty impressive, I think you’ll agree.

While you decide if you’d quite like to own this futuristic driving machine have a look at the advert for it and see what you think.

Could this be the future of car garages?

The expansion of getting facilities needs to keep up with higher numbers of electric cars making their way from showrooms to the road. BMW wants to make sure that potential drivers in their premium i3 all-electric and i-8 plugin hybrid cars have a charging port option that functions of the same quality as their BMWi cars and looks as exquisite.

The Solar Carport Concept plans to be an alternative for electric vehicle owners to supply power with their cars independent of electricity costs. Clearly obtaining good efficiency out of it demands dwelling in a sun abundant locality. The carport joined with the BMW i Wallbox Pro, which monitors and regulates vehicle charging may also redirect excessive electricity to utilise in your home.

At present, BMW hasn’t confirmed whether the Solar Carport will get to the production stage, but the growth of the electric car market clearly leaves space for a new-generation of energy providing garages.

Created by DesignworksUSA, BMW's California-based design studio, electric-vehicle recharging through the usage of solar power that is renewable is provided by the Carport Concept. The flat-roof design features 24 thin-glass-on-glass solar collector panels. A modular support prototype imitates lines and surface sculpting from the BMW i-range.
