The 10 Best M Cars

BMW M was established in 1972 and represents BMW’s foray into the sports cars market. The first M product didn’t wear an M badge, but nonetheless it is considered a sports car by any means. The 3.0 CSL was built for the racing venues and was followed by the first M-badged vehicle: the M1.
Built starting in 1978, the M1 is one of BMW’s finest vehicles to date. It was the first and only mid-engined BMW to be mass produced. It was powered by a twin-cam M88/1 3.5 liter 6-cylinder gasoline engine with Kugelfischer injection.
Another iconic M car was the M8, but the iconic M model never made it into production.  The M8 was equipped with a V12 prototype engine based on the S70 engine, producing around 550 horsepower.
For the compact segment, BMW launched a series of classic M cars that have gone to the heart of BMW purists, such as the E30 M3, E28 M5 or the M Coupe.
In more recent times, models like the E46 M3, E61 M5 Touring and the 1M are bound to become classics in their own way. BMW M continues to evolve and adapt to modern era requirements and regulations, and over the next decade an interesting M lineup will come to life, maybe even the first M5/M6 all-wheel drive.
Here are the Top 10 Best M Cars in our opinion:

BMW M says: “We would love an M supercar”

The topic BMW M supercar comes to front once again. Years and years of debate and speculations and no BMW M supercar seem to be in sight.
The latest report from AutoExpress UK comes to confirm what our sources have said for years: the M division wants a supercar, some clay models were already built, but no business case was able to receive the approval from the board members.
For the UK outlet, Carsten Priest, head of product development at the M performance division, says a supercar to rival the Audi R8 and Mercedes-AMG GT is highly desirable, but hugely expensive.

“If you called any of the 550 employees at BMW M and said you’d pick up the cost for this project, we would always say: ‘Yes, let’s go for it right away,” says Priest. “But larger companies have to see the overall context. We always have more ideas than budget is made available – we have to see which priorities will be decided upon.”
A BMW spokesman revealed also that as a rule of thumb a brand new model costs 1 billion euros to develop, whereas the i3 and i8 were more like 2 billion each.
“We have to be forward thinking, the decision has been made to establish BMW i, including an i8 supercar type of model in its line-up and that’s obviously a huge investment that’s been made,” Priest added.
But he also left the door open for 2016 when BMW celebrates its 100th anniversary, a date that we heard in the past it might concise with the launch of an exciting BMW car.

“I still remember the days of the M1. It was 36 years ago that the car was introduced,” added Priest. “The question is at what time do you need something to reactivate what you’ve established?”
When pressed to chat about the BMW M1 Hommage Concept, Priest added:  “The name clearly indicates what the primary purpose was, it was not meant to twist anybody’s arm.”
“I was excited for us to see what the reaction was like and it was overwhelmingly positive, but noone at M is surprised. Everyone would be ready, they would probably even do this in their spare time if the project order was given.”
While none of these are really news, these words give us hope that BMW will once again be competitive at the supercar level and show the world why they believe “M Is The Most Powerful Letter In The World.”

Bargain BMW’s

It isn’t IMPOSSIBLE to get a brilliant performance car for reasonable money...

BMW – 328I (£1,550) – The M division, which was formed to develop BMW’s racing cars, has knocked out some fantastic metal over the years – with desirability to match. The first M3, the E30 model made from 1985-92, has seen its values shoot up over the last year. One of the last to be built, the sport Evo, will now cost you well over £50,000 if it’s in excellent condition.

There was one on Piston-heads which was up for £85,000 – crazy i know however it’s true. So it’s not that impossible to get an old M3 for sensible money.
The E36 M3, which BMW built from 1992-99, is a real bargain with good cars not much over two grand. However there are other brilliant performance BMW’s that don’t have the ‘Sex Appeal’ of the M badge but are great to drive anyway.
BMW – Z3 (£3,950) – Now this is a real cracker. Its 1997 so it’s an E36 version (in BMW’s coding system) it’s powered by the lovely 2.8-litre straight-six engine which has 190bhp. Doesn’t sound much but the E36 wasn’t particularly heavy, so goes very well. It’s great fun to drive with lots of skidding and tyre-smoking potential. This car is in metallic green, has 115,000 miles on the clock but has a full service history.

BMW – 840 CI (£4,500) – BMW’s 8-series coupe wasn’t particularly rated by car mags when new but is still a comfortable, quick long-distance tourer. The 8-series used to be a real bargain but prices seem to be nudging up. However, affordable cars like this 1997 840 CI are still around today.

This car has the 4.4-litre 286bhp V8 motor that’s more reliable than the previous 4.0-litre version, a lot of style goes for a lot more money.
