Where Mercedes began...

Mercedes-Benz is a German manufacturer of luxury cars who’s headquarters can be found in Stuttgart, Baden Wurttemberg, Germany. 

Mercedes is a multinational division of the German manufacturer Daimler AG and not only manufacture cars. They also make buses, coaches and lager trucks/lorries. 

Mercedes-Benz’s history can be traced back to Karl Benz and the creation of the first petrol car which was actually funded by his wife, Bertha Benz. The “automobile” was first marketed in 1901 by Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft. The first Mercedes-Benz brand name vehicles were produced in 1926, following the merger of Karl Benz's and Gottlieb Daimler's companies into the Daimler-Benz company. 

Mercedes-Benz's slogan is "Das Beste oder nichts" which translates to: “The Best or Nothing” (apt we think)

Mercedes-Benz is part of the "German Big 3" luxury car makers, along with Audi and BMW. These 3 manufactures are the three leading luxury car sellers and it just so happens that we stock all three. To browse what we have in stock click here!

Way back when…

Anybody that has recently bought a car from us would have visited and seen the site as it stands today…but it's not been this way forever...

Our Service Centre site manager was doing some digging around and found the images of Big from back in 2009 and here they are:

As you can see a lot has changed in the last 5 years. With the opening of Canterbury Prestige in March 2013 and the opening of Canterbury Motoring World in January 2013 the business has been through some miraculous changes. 

Now with a dedicated 24 hours 7-day-a-week Service Centre too, it's amazing to see the transformation.

The price of driving theory tests to be reduced.

Do you remember doing your driving lessons? Do you remember the dreaded theory test? Well, somehow we all managed to pass because here we are!

It has been announced today that the price of diving theory tests will be lowered by £6. It will then be lowered again by £2 in 2015.

The current price of a driving theory test is £31. The price will therefore fall to £25 and then drop again to £23 in 2015. Fees for motorcycles and other vehicles categories will also be subject to a price cut!

Stephen Hammond (transport minister) said these cuts will save learning drivers “around (£)9 million annually”. An impressive figure we think!
The change in price has been bought about after the signing of a new contract for the delivery of theory test. The new contract has secured cost savings and these savings are going to be passed on the public (Alastair Peoples; chief executive of Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency).

Should I inflate my tyres past the recommended psi?

Before we address if tyres should be inflated passed their recommended PSI, let’s tackle what PSI stands for and what it is!

PSI stands for: Pressure per Square Inch and indicates how much air you should have in your tyres to effectively support your vehicle.

It is recommended that your cars PSI is checked weekly; especially in the colder months, as the fluctuating temperate of the tyres (as you drive) and the weather can alter the pressure within the tyres.

You can find out your vehicles recommended PSI is by checking the vehicles handbook or by typing your registration into the following website: "Find your vehicles recommended PSI here"

What happens if I inflate my tyres passed the recommended PSI?

While you are driving the motion between the cars tyres and the ground causes intense friction (allows the car to grip the road). This friction causes the air inside the tyres to heat up and with anything that heats up, it begins to expand. If you over-inflate your tyres to the maximum PSI (or just below the maximum PSI) there will not be enough room for the heated air to expand. The air will expand anyway and could therefore cause a blowout.

Also, when you over inflate types (beyond their recommended PSI) the tyres become hard. This means that less of the tyre is in contact with the road surface giving a decreased grip which could also lead to an accident due to lack of control over the vehicle. Because less of the tyre would be in contact with the road, the part that is in contact with the road (usually the middle of the tyre) will wear out quicker meaning the tyres will need to be replaced sooner than usual if they stay over inflated.

To conclude, although over inflating your tyres can give you a better fuel mileage it can potentially be very dangerous so it’s always best to follow the owners guide or professional advice and inflate your tyres to the recommended PSI.

First official day of summer – THIS SATURDAY!

That’s right, you heard us! The first official day of summer is June 21^st which is this Saturday!
Although it may not look very summery now (we know that!) we’re sure it’s on its way.

Congestion Charge!

You may or may not know that as of yesterday the congestion charge was raised to £11.50 a day!

The congestion charge was introduced in 2003 on the 17^th February. To this day it remains to be one of the biggest congestion charges in the world. The charge was introduced to try and relieve some of the congestion around the city centre with all of the charged monies going to London’s transport system. The reinvested money is used to improve Transport for London and its networks. 

The congestion charge must be paid if you pass through the congestion zone Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:00 and 18:00, although there are a few exceptions for specific vehicles or individuals. Also, the charge does not apply on weekends, bank holidays or the period between Christmas Day and New Years!

If the charge is not paid you will receive a PCN and the fine could be anywhere between £65 and £195! (Probably best to just pay the £11.50).

Mercedes to release “special” A and B class editions

The Mercedes A class and B class haven’t been about too long but Mercedes have revealed that they will be releasing a “special” or modified version of the car to be known as “Edition 1”.

The Edition 1’s new spec will include; as standard, a reverse camera kit, a central armrest (for the back seat), a panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable front passenger seats and glossy exterior mirror backings. Both models will also come with newly designed alloy wheels.

On top of this the B class will also come with a rear seat entertainment system.

As for the engine there is not be no dramatic changes well, none at all in fact but they will both retain their shared 107 bhp 2.2-litre diesel engine. The only major changed Mercedes have confirmed is raising the ground clearance as it has been reposted in India that the cars underside has been damaged due to being too close to the floor.

These modifications will only be available on the diesel version of the cars and have yet to have a confirmed released date or price- we’ll keep you updated!

Get caught speeding and face the new consequences

So, we’re sure you've heard by now that the government are thinking of introducing new disciplinary action against those caught speeding on the motorway.

Currently, if you get caught speeding on the motorway you get issued with a letter with intention to prosecute. From this, you could either get offered a speed awareness course or have to pay an £100 fine and be awarded 3-6 points on your licence. If you were speeding excessively, you may even have your licence revoked and be banned from driving or forced to retake your tests.

But now, they are thinking of introducing a new system in which if you get caught speeding on the motorway you will be issued with a (quadrupled) fine of £10,000.

That’s worth more than or almost as much as some of the cars motorists will be driving! 

The fine for getting caught whilst speeding on a dual carriageway is also going to increase four-fold from £1,000 to £4,000. This fine also applies for being caught whilst using your phone behind the wheel. No excuses any-more. 

If this new legislation is put forward and approved it will be the first change to the penalty system since 1991 and the idea has already been met by some opposition. People that are against this legislation worry that the increased fine will prevent people having the courage to challenged unjust speeding tickets/offences in court. 

So, we want to know what your opinion on the whole thing is. Do you think increasing the fine to £10,000 is a good idea or do you think revoking a licence is more of a punishment for drivers caught speeding?

BIG gets that little bit bigger update!

On Friday we posted a blog letting you all know that Big was getting that little bit bigger.

With the addition of our brand-new, shiny Service Centre we had no need for the old servicing bays at West Malling. So, we’re tearing them down to make space for more quality pre-owned BMWs and Mercedes.

Yes, that does mean it’s going to take you longer to look round the site but look on the bright side, there’s more to choose from!

The great return of Porsche – Le Mans.

After many years of being away, all of you race fans will be excited to know that Porsche is due to return to Le Mans this years. 

Although they have been away for quite some time we’re pretty sure that they’re going to have something pretty amazing up their sleeves to surprise us all on the 14th & 15th June. Audi may just get a good run for their money this year!

The first ever 22 Hours of Le Mans (or 24 Heurs du Mans, in French) was held in 1923 near the town of Le Mans and is now the most prestigious car race in the world.

The race is organised by the Automobile Club de L'Quest (ACO) and runs on the Circuit de la Sarthe, a circuit that has a mix of closed public roads and a specialist motor racing circuits, meant not only to test a car and driver's ability to be quick, but also to last over a 24 hour period.

The teams will race in groups called classes, for cars of similar specification while at the same time competing for outright placing amongst all of the classes. The race was originally held for cars sold to the general public as sport cars compared to the specialist racing cars used in the Grand Prix.

Over time, the competing vehicles evolved away from their publicly available road car roots and today, the race is split into two classes of specialized enclosed-bodywork two-seat Prototype sports cars and two classes of Grand Touring cars which bear much closer resemblance to high performance sports cars as sold to the public today.

BIG gets that little bit bigger!

Just when you thought we couldn't get any bigger, here we go again!

Before we opened our dedicated Service Centre in Snodland all of our vehicles we’re serviced, MOT’d and checked at the back of our sites Forecourts in servicing bays.

Now we have a Service Centre we have no need for the old bays so they’re being torn down! Have a look for yourself:

When the bays have been removed and the site cleaned up there will be space for up to another 50 cars for our customers to browse. This means they’ll be even more cars for you to choose from when you visit us.
