Euro NCAP: 4 Stars for the MINI Cooper

The new generation MINI Cooper was rated four stars by the Euro NCAP.
In the European safety and crash test has scored 79 percent in Adult Occupant, 73 percent in Child Occupant, 66 percent in Pedestrian Safety and 56 percent in Safety Assist. The only “Marginal” rating was given to the torso in the Side Car impact.
Other areas of the test were marked as “Adequate” or “Good”. The only “Poor” rating was given to the lower part of the hood and lower side parts of the windshield.

Here are the results:
Adult Occupant:
The passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal impact. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger. MINI showed that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and to those sat in different positions, whose knees might strike the dashboard at a different location to that seen in the test. In the side barrier test, forces were transmitted to parts of the dummy which are not representative of a human body, reducing the load on the ribs. These forces resulted in the maximum penalty being applied to the chest score and the assessment being downgraded from good to marginal. Loads on the abdomen also indicated marginal protection. In the pole test, protection of the chest and abdomen was rated as adequate. Tests on the front seats and head restraints revealed good protection against whiplash injury in the event of a rear-end collision, while a geometric assessment of the rear seats indicated that the protection there would also be good. An autonomous emergency braking system is available which works at low, city-type speeds. As it is an option, it was not included in the assessment.

Child Occupant:
In the frontal impact, decelerations in the chest of the 1½ year dummy were marginally high, despite the dummy being sat in a rearward-facing restraint. Forward movement of the head of the 3 year dummy, sat in a forward-facing restraint, was not excessive but forces in the chest and neck were also marginally high. The front passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rearward-facing restraint to be used in that seating position. However, no information is provided to the driver if the airbag is still armed and unsafe for a child restraint, and the system was not rewarded. All of the child restraints for which the car is designed could be installed and accommodated, except for the Group 0+ restraint used for the assessment (Maxi-Cosi Cabriofix). While this restraint could be properly accommodated in the car, installation in the rear passenger seat was difficult. Height adjustment is an option on the front passenger seat and, without this, installing the restraint in the rear requires more actions than Euro NCAP considers suitable, and zero points were awarded.
Pedestrian
The bumper provided good protection to pedestrians’ legs and scored maximum points. However, the front edge of the bonnet was poor at all test locations and scored no points. The MINI has an active bonnet. The system detects when a pedestrian has been struck and uses actuators to raise the bonnet, providing extra clearance to the hard structures in the engine bay. MINI showed that the system worked robustly for a variety of pedestrian statures and over a range of speeds. Accordingly the bonnet was tested in the deployed (raised) position and results were predominantly good or adequate.

Safety Assist:

Electronic stability control is standard equipment on the MINI, as is a seatbelt reminder for the front and rear seats. A driver-set speed limitation device is an option. As it is expected to be fitted to most cars sold, it was included in the assessment. An autonomous emergency braking system is available as an option but is not expected to be fitted to most of the cars sold, so it was not included in the rating. The MINI does not have a lane assistance system.

Fastest Selling Cars - Hybrid popularity grows

The growing appeal of hybrid power is reflected by the presence of three hybrids in the top 10 of Glass’s league of fastest selling used cars for September. They are led by Toyota’s Prius, which holds the top spot for the second month in a row. In third place is the Honda Insight, while Glass’s believes that the Lexus RX has reached its position at number eight largely through sales of the hybrid version.

Glass’s Head of Valuations, Rupert Pontin, says: “It will be interesting to see whether this situation continues over the coming months. The success of the Prius certainly highlights the value-for-money status of this model and reiterates the importance of low running costs to second-hand car buyers.”
Rupert notes that the buying patterns of cost-conscious families, out in force this September, has placed two family-friendly Vauxhall MPVs in the top 10. He feels that the Zafira and Meriva now represent excellent value for money. He is also pleased to see the Mazda CX-5, which he describes as “competent and often underrated”, in 10th place. “Retail buyers have at last seen the appeal of this crossover SUV but generally speaking these are in short supply.”
Buyers spent an average of £16,511 on this month’s top 10 fastest selling used cars, and just £10,717 on the 10 slowest sellers.
For the first time in many months, Merdedes-Benz had no products in the bottom 10 sellers, and in fact none in the bottom 20. Rupert Pontin wonders if that could be indicative of the current feel-good factor for this brand.

Three upper medium models languish in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th places from bottom, namely the Subaru Legacy, Seat Toledo and Subaru Outback. “This perhaps signifies the apathy from the retail buyer for this sector of the market,” Rupert suggests. One big surprise among the slowest sellers is Renault’s Kangoo, which has historically proven to be desirable due to its spacious design and individual appearance coupled with a competitive price.
The slowest seller of all is the Renault Scenic, which has been gradually moving towards this position. Rupert concludes: “Despite great interior space, a high driving position and potentially economical engines, poor reliability and build quality have driven this model to the bottom spot.”

New Mini Unveiled

Manufactures face something of a dilemma when it comes to producing a new version of a popular model. Do they come out with a radical new look to underline the newness? Or, does that risk scaring off the buyers who clearly like the look of the existing car?

If your car depends for it success on continuing the style of a historic model, then the first option, creating something radical, is probably not an option.

It’s with Mini, who have just launched the third generation new Mini today. They are certainly keen to get the message across that this is a new car. The words “all-new” and “new from the ground up” are prominent in description.

Mini’s claims for the new car are that it offers improvements in technology (indeed, they it is the most ‘connected’ car in its class), engine efficiency, power delivery, driving dynamics and quality. It’s also said to be quieter and more spacious.

To make it more spacious, the Mini has grown 98mm in length, 44mm in width and 7mm in height. The wheelbase has been extended by 28mm. But, despite the increased dimensions, the design team have been careful to keep the proportions faithful to the Mini style.

There are three new engines for this latest Mini, each with twin turbo technology to provide good performance along with efficiency. Performance is increased on all three engines with power coming in lower in the rev range, while fuel consumption and emission levels have been reduced by as much as 27%

The Mini Cooper Hatch has a new 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 134 bhp. The Mini Cooper D Hatch has a diesel three-cylinder of 1.5 litres, producing 114bhp. The new Mini Cooper D Hatch, scrapes under the 100 g/km barrier at 98g/km, thereby qualifying for its free UK ta disc.

The new Mini is right up there with the incoming LED headlight technology that offers much lower power consumption and a lighting colour very close to daylight, providing a more natural environment for better version. Mini say the new car is the first in this segment to offer LED headlights for both dip and main beam. The headlights are surrounded with daylight LED running lights.

There are the usual customizing options, with contrast colour mirrors, bonnet stripes and, for the first time, roof rails appearing on the options list.

Inside there is greater adjustment for the driver’s seat. A new dashboard mounted on the steering column puts the speedometer (along with the rev counter) in front of the driver with the dials arranged vertically. The Mini icon of the large central speedometer has been maintained, but now as a display, depending on the equipment options. This where you will find vehicle functions, information, in-car entertainment, navigation, and the connected services. There is an optional head-up display.

Other options include a “driving assistant” with a cruise control that maintains a pre-determined distance from the car in front, collision and pedestrian warning system, road sign detection and high-beam assist. Rear view camera and parking assistance are options for the first time.

The new Mini will go on sale in the spring with prices in the UK starting at £15,300 for the Mini Cooper Hatch, rising to £18,650 for the Cooper S.

MINI Electric Car?

An electric version of the MINI car is on the roadmap for the British carmaker. The new MINI will not only be their first mass-production electric car – MINI E-electric was a trial – but also their first model to move away from the Mini original design.

Earlier this year at the 2014 Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance, the MINI design team unveiled theSuperleggera concept car, a two-door, longer and sleeker MINI. The car has been widely praised for its exceptional design and for the combination of classic and modern lines and materials.
Some may be excited about the change to the ‘MINI look’ however other may prefer for them to keep to the original shape.
The Mini has undergone several reincarnations and changed ownership since it first came on the scene in 1959. The brand was relaunched in 2001 under BMW’s ownership at the Cowley plant, which has just produced its 3 millionth MINI. But sales has been less than spectacular in the last year and a potential brand shake-up has been the talk of the town.

BMW produced 303,177 Minis in 2013 at sites in Oxford, southern England, the Netherlands and Graz in Austria.

THREE-MILLIONTH MINI LEAVES ASSEMBLY LINE TODAY!!!!

Thirteen years after the brand re-launch in 2001, MINI has reached an impressive milestone today, as the three-millionth MINI rolled off the assembly line at the oxford plant in the UK. Two million MINIs have been exported from the UK to more than 110 countries over the same period. Harald Kruger, member of the board of management of BMW AG, responsible for production, and Peter Schwarenbauer, member of the board of management of BMW AG, responsible for Mini, Bmw Motorrad, Roll-Royce and Aftersales, joined Baroness Susan Kramer, British Minister of State for Transport, and Frank Bachmann, managing director of plants Oxford and Swindon, to celebrate the special-anniversary vehicle as part of an official ceremony. The car is a MINI 5 door sporting the UK’s Union Jack.
Made in England: MINI Production in the UK
Plant Oxford currently produces the MINI, MINI 5 Door, MINI Convertible, MINI Roadster and MINI Coupe Models. The success of the MINI brand can be seen in the positive developments at plant Oxford since 2001. The Oxford site employs around 4,000 people. Working three shifts, the plant produces around 1,000 cars per day.
The UK is the MINI brand’s second-largest market worldwide after the U.S. the UK is also the fourth-largest market for the BMW group. 80% of the MINI’s made in Oxford are exported, making MINI the third-largest vehicle exporter in the UK.
The MINI brand has had strong ties to the UK for decades. Our MINI production in oxford represents a commitment to the brand’s identity, firmly in line with our successful strategy of ‘production follows the market’. Oxford is the centre of our British MINI production network, with the Swindon pressings plant and the Hams Hill engine plant near Birmingham. Stated board of management member for production Harald Kruger at the event celebrating the production milestone.
“Today, we mark two important milestones for MINI. Three million MINIs produced, and two million MINIs exported from Oxford to customers worldwide. These are impressive figures and definitely a reason to celebrate. In markets big and small, MINI has always appealed to customers on am emotional level,” said Board of Management member Peter Schwarzenbauer.
Transport Minister Baroness Kramer said: “I Congratulate the workers at MINI plant Oxford on reaching this remarkable milestone. The MINI is a British icon and is a major part of a thriving automotive industry spearheading the growing British economy. This government is working to create the right environment for car manufactures like BMW to continue innovating and developing British made car with worldwide appeal.”

Millions invested signals clear commitment to British Production Locations
The BMW group has invested a total of around £1.75 billion in its British plants since 2000. Between 2012 and 2014 alone, the BMW group is investing a total of £750 million in its MINI UK production network. This investment is part of the international growth strategy for the MINI UK brand and secures the long-term future of the Oxford plant and safeguard 5,600 jobs at oxford, Swindon and Hams plants.
Global growth strategy: expansion of production capacity
The BMW group produced a total of 303,177 MINI-brand vehicles in 2013. The production volume at MINI Oxford reached 175,986 units. A further 125,559 units of the MINI Countryman and MINI Pacemen were contract Manufactured at MSF Graz in Austria and other assembly plants in Asia.
The BMW group further expanded its production capacities as the next major step in the implementation of its global growth strategy. With the significant growth of the MINI brand, the BMW group requires additional external production capacity beyond that of MINI plant Oxford. Sharing production of the MINI hatch with contract manufacturer VDL Nedcar (Born, Netherlands) since July 2014 will give the BMW group global production network greater flexibility for other models. The British production network will nevertheless remain the heart of MINI production.

Now, the Head of Mini USA; David Duncan, has challenged all MINI owners to take participate in the campaign to prove that “even though they drive a small car, they can do big things”

A slightly strange challenge we think but we might be swayed into giving it a go! Would you take part in this new craze?

JUSTPARK!

JustPark is the new online service which allows drivers to locate and then navigate to a parking space.

Mini have also now confirmed they will be the first car brand in the world to integrate this system. Using the app, customers registered with Just Park will be able to located and book a parking space from over 100,000 spaced around the UK.

The car will then navigate to the parking space which saves the driver rolling around looking for somewhere to park. The average driver will spend 106 days of their life searching for a space.

How it works!
Drivers can opt to locate a parking space at their destination or get the app to search for spaces as they carry out their journey. The driver can then select and pay for the space whilst before being navigated to it! Simple and easy!

JustPark and BMW
“The app is the latest product of the partnership between JustPark and BMW i Ventures, the venture capital arm of BMW that invests in startups working to improvehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png mobility in urban areas and took a strategic stake in JustPark – formerly known as ParkatmyHouse – in 2011.”
