How does the BMW i3 handle in winter?

The new BMW i3 made its U.S. debut this past Spring, therefore many i3 owners are wondering how the electric-vehicle will handle in the snowy winters of the Midwest or Northeast. Since European customers received their first i3 models this past winter, we set to look for a report that outlines the winter experience aboard the BMW i3.
Meet this i3 owner from Sweden who spent a few months of heavy winters with his BMW electric car. He begins to outline his experience by starting with some of the i3 features that makes it an acceptable winter car, such as the built-in heat pump, insulated heated batteries and functionality to set heating preset times or start it immediately through an app. He also mentions the good traction control system.

BMW i3 has a heat pump as standard for all cars sold in Sweden but it’s available only the BEV model – fully electric. The REx models do no have a place for the heat pump due to that space being used by the fuel tank and the little combustion engine.
Heat Pump
A heat pump reduces energy about 30% and since the display says that the interior heating consumes about 12 km during a charge cycle the heat pump should be able to increase the range 5-10 km.
Insulated Battery
To protect the battery from the extreme cold temperatures, sometimes seen in the Midwest or Northeast, BMW has insulated batteries on the i3 and heats them to get the optimal energy. The insulation also helps in the summer when it cools down the batteries.
But despite all the insulation, temperatures affect the range of electric cars. Low temperatures require cabin heating which requires more energy spent and therefore a lower driving range. The Nordic i3 owner says with the car in comfort mode, heat on and a normal driving you can expect in winter time 80 – 100 km drive on a single charge (20 – 25 kWh / 100 km).
“But BMW says that one should be able to go 130-160 km on single charge – is that not true?,” says the owner. “Well, my experience is that if you turn off the heat and drive really carefully you can without difficulty drive at 12 kWh / 100km. But then it is neither convenient nor fun.”

Traction in the snow
With an impressive 1000 km of winter driving, the i3 owners came out to be impressed with the i3’s handling and traction.
“A rear wheel drive with tremendous torque should be difficult to drive but it is not. The traction control system works well. It slips a little bit in the back at times but never so that it is unpleasant.”
But he encountered some issues strong crosswinds which are noticeable in the car, we suspect due to the fairly low weight of the i3.

In the next few months, we will learn more from the U.S. i3 owners about the winter driving, as well as from our own BMW i3.

760Li Security vehicles!

I think you’ll agree that these are pretty cool…

The Australian government have purchased nine BMW 760Li Security vehicles that are both bulletproof and bombproof. The reason behind this was to protect leaders/special guests at the G20 summit that’s being held later on this year.

The fleet of nine cars totals a figure that isn’t shy of $6.2 million. As the hosts of the G20 they have an obligation to protect the leaders attending so these cars can withstand AK47 fire, explosives and armour-piercing weapons. One word- AWESOME!

Both the BMW 760i/760Li and the 750i are the first cars to be certified to BRV 2009 and both vehicles meet the requirements of the new ballistic protection level VR7.

What more security can you ask for? We think these cars seem pretty damn cool and we hope we stumble across one at some point!

BMW Vs Audi & Mercedes-Benz

Carbuyer takes the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class for a little drive and give you their review!
The new F30 3 Series Series was marketted to rival the Audi A4 (mainly for the quality of the interior)  Usually, BMW claims victory when it comes to the best driver experience & driver enjoyment so it will be interesteing to see if it comes out in top again!
Mercedes has based the new C-Class very much on the higher-end S-Class. The new C-lass is meant to be thought of as a mini S-Class with it's luxurious interior, smart equipment and the option to purchase even more equipment!

Take a look at the video below to see who comes out on top and let us know what you think too!

BMW does the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge!

The BMW CCA National Office staff accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge after being nominated by BMW executive director, Frank Patek. Just to make the challenge that bit more exciting and different the team did t5he challenge while BMW's Mike Renner drifted the F82 M4 around their skid pad- we think it's pretty cool!
And of course it wouldn't be any fun if the BMW team didn't keep the nominations going. Their nominations were:

  • Mercedes-Benz Club of America’s staff,
  • Audi Club’s staff,
  • BMW CCA Foundation staff and
  • BMW CCA’s own Lindsey Branston!
Let's see if they get in done within the 24 hours but for now, check out the video of the challenge for yourself!

The BMW X6M

We are drawing ever closer to the rumoured reveal of the BMW X6M. It is said to be being revealed at the LA Auto show but as it reveal draws closer and closer we are seeing more of the skin from the prototypes.

The second generation X6 is a much smarter looking version of the original and the M does nothing but build on this by adding a re-stylised bumper, bigger wheels rear diffusers and quad pipes! Sounds like quite a beast if you ask us!

The engine will be a 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V8 but BMW's M division may work its magic to give it a bit more power!

Its transition options have not been fully confirmed but its 6-speed automatic could be replaced by a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission or an 8-speed automatic.

ZF 8-Speed Automatic gearbox!

Since 2009, the eight-speed automatic ZF transmission ensured that BMW customers experienced the best fuel consumption/transmission on the market.
Now a facelift of the award winning gearbox will come to market and it will be available in the 2014 BMW 520d.
The most efficient choice is the new BMW 520d Sedan with the revised ZF eight-speed automatic, which consumes 0.4 liters less than before and has a CO2 emission of 109 grams per kilometer.

Dr. JĂĽrgen Greiner says “BMW is the first premium manufacturer to take advantage of the second generation 8-speed automatic transmission.”

BMW X2

The success of the BMW X6 has diversified to give us the BMW X4 Coupe and now the BMW X2!

The confirmed design hasn't yet been released yet but based on concert drawings and the test models but here it is:

Power will come from three and four-cylinder units. At the low-end of the range, there will be a 1.5 litre turbo petrol and diesel found in the 218i and 218d Active Tourer. The top end of the range, a performance X2 vehicle with 300 horsepower might appear as well to compete with the Mercedes GLA 45 AMG and Audi RS Q3.A plug-in hybrid version is likely as well, promising 100mpg-plus.

So, what do you think about it? Do you think the BMW X2 could do the next best thing in 2017?

2015 BMW X5

There has been a few rumours that the BMW X5 will featured an upgraded version of the current engine which is thought to put out more than 560 horsepower and closer to 600! That’s a pretty quick ride!

The car is scheduled to launch in the spring of next year and will have large air intakes, rear diffuser and a wider body kit- this is looking to be quite the car we think! The concept and test model also showcase new lights that flow around the front of the car and into the iconic kidney Grille!

To top it all off, this vehicle is also being designed to offer more miles to the gallon due to weight saving chassis! We can’t wait to get our hands on one and take it for a spin. What do you think, could this be the car for you?

BMW vs Volkswagen Video

Check out Chris Harris as he puts the BMW and Volkswagen head to head.

The Golf R is powered by a EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This will produce 290 brake horsepower.

Both vehicles aim to produce in the neighborhood of 300 horsepower, with the BMW taking the edge with 320 hp. However, the Golf R gets standard all-wheel drive, which is an option on the M235i.

Check out the video yourself and see what you think:

MINI USA's bizarre challenge...

Have you head of the viral campaign called the #IceBucketChallenge? No? You have now!

This is campaign challenges the darer to have a whole bucket of ice water thrown over them. Once the challenge is complete the participant is able to nominate others who have to complete the challenge themselves within 24 hours.

Now, the Head of Mini USA; David Duncan, has challenged all MINI owners to take participate in the campaign to prove that “even though they drive a small car, they can do big things”

A slightly strange challenge we think but we might be swayed into giving it a go! Would you take part in this new craze?

2014 X5.

Is this the wackiest paint job for an X5? We think it just might be!

The colouring was applied by vinyl wrap rather that re-painting all of the body work.
The new BMW X5 is 1.25 inches longer, half an inch shorter and a quarter of an inch wide. So, there isn’t much difference all in all but it makes a different to the amazing bodywork. The wheelbase is 115.4 (2,933mm) compared to the usual 115.5.

It’s priced to start at $53,725! What do you think? Your friends and family will most definitely see you coming!

The i8 Key Fob

The first official picture of the BMW i8 key fob has been realised and here it is:

As any usual BMW key, it has the buttons to lock ad unlock the car as well as well as a button to pop the boot but this key is a techs dream. They key also features a mini screen that will show a variety of vehicle information. One of the most useful bits of information the key will display will be how many miles/levels of lithium-ion battery and tank display.

What do you think of it? Too technical? Cool? Tell us what you think!

I8: 300,000 euros per car sold for advertising costs

It’s a well-known fact that the advertising of a new products is pricey but 300,000 per car sold…really?

According to the German trade journal Advertising and sell, BMW has invested around 16.6 million euros in 2014- just for the first half of the year all on the i8!

There has been 55 of the i8’s sold which equates to 301,818 Euros per car sold! The i8 is still in prosecution although production remains limited due to the volume constraints at the production factory. The number of i8’s sold is still said to be on the increase and is expected to increase dramatically in the next few months with the release in the US Market.

We wish BMW all the best with the i8 sales and we’re hoping to have one soon too but can you really justify 300,000 on advertising per car?

Death of the tax disc... learn the rules or face a £1,000 fine!

The tax disc was originally introduced in 1921 and was used to prove that the owner of the vehicle had paid their road tax. From the 1st of October the paper tax disc will cease to exist and will be replaced by an electronic system.

The idea of this was to streamline the whole tax system and make it easier to tax a vehicle via the official DVLA website.

Although this system will be easier there will be rules with it. If consumers don’t learn the rules or break them there could be a £1,000 fine!

Under the new rules, motorists will have to register their vehicle online to pay tax and if the car has not been registered for tax the car will be caught out by number-plate recognition camera which track all vehicles on the road.

One of the downside to this new system is that if someone is to buy a used vehicle any remaining time on the tax does not count! The new vehicle owner will have to register the car with the DVLA and re-purchase the tax. The previous owner will be automatically refunded for any outstanding months left on the tax disc.

The seller of the vehicle is also responsible for letting the DVLA know of the change of ownership by filling in a V5C form and sending back to the DVLA. If this is not done there could also be a £1000 fine.

So, although there are a few draw-backs to the new tax system it will most defiantly make our car windscreens look cleaner! What do you think of the new rules coming into play in October?
