Big Motoring World Reviews BMW i8 and Apple Watch connectivity

The BMW i8 is priced at £104,540, yet still represents huge value for money for the select few who are fortunate enough to buy one. Here, Big Motoring World reviews the momentous technology of the i8 which also combines with Apple Watch.

The i8

The i8 boasts a complex petrol-electric hybrid powertrain and carbon fibre construction which set it apart from many previous hybrids. It has a concept-car look and a class-leading infotainment system which gives it a full driving experience.

The technology

BMW released a smartphone app in the initial i8 launch, but now things have been taken up a level. Owners can now remotely control functions on the car directly from their wrists using Apple Watch, which includes controlling car heating, flashing the headlights and the radio. The smartphone app has even more features, including sharing your eco stats with other i8 users. The app includes building a navigation route to your preferred destination and hooking it up to your i8’s Drive System before you’ve even set foot in the car.

Future

Unlike much of recent technology, the BMW technology is all useful and adds to your driving experience. Connectivity and internet access needs to be at a premium for the full realisation of this technology to be discovered, but this is a clear step in the right direction for BMW. It is expected that this technology will continue into further developments by BMW which will filter down into other models.

Big Motoring World reviews Mercedes apartments

For just £400 a night you could have the ultimate Mercedes-Benz themed bachelor pad. Big Motoring World reviews the latest developments from the German automakers.

Mercedes theme

The apartments are to be designed in Singapore next year, to look just like the inside of a car. And although they’re intended for short stays, they are over 1,000 sq/ft each and include a dining area, kitchen and two bedrooms.

The apartments are generally aimed at people who like to dot around different cities for regular stays and the TVs include information on the Mercedes brand, with the use of the Mercedes-Benz app. The Mercedes theme runs through the colours, furniture and accessories in the apartments.

Mercedes’ mission

Gorden Wagener, head of design at parent company Daimler, said: “As in our vehicles we have combined sensual surfaces and clean lines with intelligent high-tech functionality in order to create a perfectly conceived world of modern luxury that promotes wellbeing and relaxation.

“All the appointments display the hallmarks of Mercedes design. The overarching concept unites flowing lines with sculptural furniture, blending seamlessly into an organic whole.

“The designers at Mercedes-Benz Style have succeeded in recreating the ambience and spaciousness of a Mercedes car in luxury serviced apartments. Their goal is to give the occupants a sense of Mercedes-Benz exclusivity.”

Porsche are also involved in building projects, with one currently being constructed in both Miami and Frankfurt.

The BMW M4 GTS is heading to the UK

Good news, you may be able to get your hands on a brand new BMW M4 GTS. The bad news is, it will cost you £121,770 as there will only be 30 available. Big Motoring World looks into the latest technology of this supercar.

Quality

The latest Bimmer is packed full of power, with a six-cylinder engine giving 493bhp. It’s got carbon fibre body parts which make it lighter than previous models too.

There will be 700 models available across the world, as BMW prepares its halo product for the M Car lineup. That’s the reason for the price hike – it’s wrth more than twice the cost of the most recent BMW M4 Coupe.

Technology

The lightweight road car includes some of the newest BMW technology, with debuts for the OLED light tech and an innovative water injection system which cools the air feeding the turbo, resulting in a huge power increase. Fuel economy remains largely the same, so you could effectively avoid ever needing to refill the five-litre water tank in the boot.

The lighting in particular is impressive, and it’s expected that this feature will roll out into future 3 Series models from BMW.

Power

The GTS can cover 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds and hit 190mph flat out; the standard car claims 4.3 seconds and is electronically limited to 155mph. That is further enhanced by the three-way coil over suspension, specifically tailored for the GTS, which is combined with BMW’s familiar adaptive damping system.

Big Motoring World reviews a classic: BMW M5-E34

Discreet performance is one of the main traits many car buyers look for, and that’s what set the BMW M5-E34 apart from its rivals. Big Motoring World looks into the classic Bimmer.

Performance & Durability

The M5 is an all-time classic – a game changer in the performance cars industry. It’s still on up, to this day.

In 1990, when CAR magazine pitched a BMW E34 M5 against a Ferarri Testarossa, it wrote: “The BMW is more practical, more comfortable, handles better, and is faster on the majority of public roads.” When Georg Kacher drove a BMW E34 M5 3.8 for the same publication in 1992, he wrote: “The M5 is as much fun to drive as a proper sports car, and makes distances shrink like a time-lapse machine.”

The E34 was the last of the six-cylinder M5s, and it’s arguably one of the best. It gets 315bhp and 266lb ft of torque on tap, enabling the M5 to get to 0-60mph in 6.3 seconds. There was also an upgraded version in 1992, with a 3.8-litre version. And the final flourish was a six-speed gearbox in 1994.

Bringing it into the future

The engine can clock up 200,000 miles when looked after properly, and the clutch also needs to be looked after – it should feel light. Both five- and six-speed gearboxes are strong in transmission. This is still a performance car bargain with sustainability and power in abundance for a car built over 20 years ago. No other car offers this level of grunt, usability, build quality and dynamic prowess for the same value.
